A.C. Gilbert's Discovery Village is a private nonprofit children's museum located in downtown Salem, in Riverfront Park.







A.C. Gilbert made American Flyer Trains famous. Under his guidance, they became the most popular toy trains ever made.

We Visit Las Vegas

We meet up with Josh and Shelby for a Rugby match.










I don't want to forget that Achilles is there.




Josh is on the UNLV Rugby team and I do not remember who they were playing.









Most important is that UNLV won.





The Team, has 15 positions numbered consecutively. 1 - 8 are forwards similar to American Football linemen. 9 - 15 are called backs.















Scrum: Rugby's unique formation, the forerunner of the American football line of scrimmage, is the method used to restart the game after the referee has whistled a minor law violation. A bound group of players from each team form a "tunnel" with the opposition. The non-offending team puts the ball into the tunnel by rolling it into the middle and each team pushes forward until one player is able to hook the ball with the feet and push it to the back row players of his/ her team. The Scrum Half then retrieves the ball and puts it into play.



Line-Out: If the ball goes out of bounds, it is restarted with a Line-Out. Both teams form a line perpendicular to the touchline and 1-meter (3 feet) apart from one another. A player of the team not responsible for the ball going out of bounds calls a play and throws the ball in the air in a straight line between the two lines. Players of each team may be supported in the air by their teammates as they jump to gain possession of the ball.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE GAME Rugby is played at a fast pace, with few stoppages and continuous possession changes. All players on the field, regardless of position, must be able to run, pass, kick and catch the ball. Likewise, All players must also be able to tackle and defend, making each position both offensive and defensive in nature. There is no blocking of the opponents like in football, and there are only five substitutions per game allowed for each team.

There is no blocking in rugby. Rugby does not have downs, and a team is not required to reach 10 yards and stop. Play is continuous like soccer. The person with the ball leads the attack. In rugby there are several ways to move the ball. Any player may carry, pass or kick the ball. Play is not stopped and continues when the ball hits the ground or when a player is tackled. The ball carrier must release the ball when tackled and roll out of the way so that other players on their feet can play the ball.

Valley of Fire State Park

The Valley of Fire derives its name from red sandstone formations, formed from great shifting sand dunes during the age of dinosaurs, 150 million years ago.

Josh is so help full.

The span of approximate occupation has been dated from 300 B.C. to 1150 A.D. Their visits probably involved hunting, food gathering, and religious ceremonies, although scarcity of water would have limited the length of their stay. Fine examples of rock art left by these ancient peoples can be found at several sites within the park.

If done thousands of years ago they are cultural treasures.

A tip for our RV'ing friends in or visiting Oregon.

On a quick auto trip a week ago we stop to to run the dogs at a Lynn County Park. What we found

was a great place for to spend sometime in the center of the Westerner Cascades. River Bend Park is still being developed, but what is there has been built with modern RVs in mind.

Located a little more than eight miles east of Sweet Home, OR on Highway 20. From I-5 take the Hwy 20 east through Lebanon and Sweet Home. Follow US-20 east (Santiam HWY SE) until arriving at the River Bend County Park. 45931 Santiam HWY, Foster, OR 97345

River Bend offers a full range of outdoor recreation opportunities including trials, river access, camping, day-use and group facilities. There's a group picnic shelter, a play field, trails, river access, fishing, and 45 campsites open for visitors and campers to enjoy. When the project is built out, the campground will have a total of 90 sites on 90 acres fronting the South Santiam River. Currently there is 35 water/electric campsites and 10 campsites without hook-ups. Two Restroom and shower facilities are already available. There is also a large covered shelter near the playground and a small enclosed shelter near the river and across from the restroom. Both of these shelters may be reserved.

The 35 campsites with hookups all have electricity to 50 amps and water. There is a dump station at the park entrance. Each site has paved parking and a concrete slab with picnic table and fire pit. Some sites are open and write next to one another and some are carved into the trees giving a sense of seclusion.
