Zion National Park, Riverside Walk

Riverside Walk begins at the Temple of Sinawava at the north end of the canyon.

There are two deer in the picture.

Life for this guy would be much harder outside the canyon.

The Virgin River Gorge is 16 miles long, 2000 feet deep, and at times only 20 to 30 feet wide.










The contrast between the trees, bushes, and flowers and the tall vertical rock walls gives the canyon its striking beauty.









Throw in the Virgin river and as one National Parks brochure called it, you have a "Haven of Habitats."










Want to study some geology? These rocks formed in environments as varied as sand dunes and shallow sea bottoms.

Zion is a part of the Colorado Plateau, an area that has been uplifted, tilted, and eroded. The bottom rock layer at Bryce Canyon is the top layer at Zion, and the bottom layer at Zion is the top layer at the Grand Canyon. Forming a feature known as "The Grand Staircase."











The arch at the bottom right of the picture like many in the park are often missed because light is not always visible through the opening.
